10 Myths and Facts about Pain

1. MYTH: All pain has a cause.
FACT: Sometimes it is hard to pinpoint the exact cause of pain.

2. MYTH: All pain can be cured.
FACT: The majority of pain can be effectively treated but not all pain can be cured.

3. MYTH: All pain can be controllable.
FACT: Pain is not always under a patient's control. This is not the patient
's fault.

4. MYTH: All pain cannot be uncontrollable.
FACT: Patients do not have to surrender to their pain; they should keep trying to find new and better ways to manage it.

5. MYTH: All pain can be overcome by mental strength.
FACT: Pain is not caused by a personality flaw or weakness. Although having a good mental attitude can positively affect the way your body manages pain, you often cannot
"think your way out of it." Most people in pain need proper, effective and caring treatment from health care providers in order to find relief.

6. MYTH: All worthwhile treatments work quickly.
FACT: Sometimes treatments take a long time to
"kick in." Be patient, do not expect immediate results, talk to your health care provider about your feelings and expectations, and follow your provider's instructions exactly.

7. MYTH: All people in pain look sick.
FACT: Pain is invisible. You will come across many, many people in your life who are in pain and look fine.

8. MYTH: All of your problems are caused by your pain.
FACT: Although pain can cause — and exacerbate — many problems, it is best to remain upbeat and solution-oriented. Keep fighting to feel good again!

9. MYTH: All aspects of your life will be ruined by your pain.
FACT: Pain does not have the power to ruin your life. YOU have the power to ruin your life. Stay positive, focused and determined and you can live a better life in spite of your condition or symptoms.

10. MYTH: All you have to do to improve your health is stay inside and rest.
FACT: Improving your health can start with a short walk, a leisurely swim or some other physical activity. Talk to your health care provider about what exercise or activity you can participate in to get your blood pumping, alleviate stress and help your healing process.
